Research conducted within the LONERS project
LONERS aims to bring unique empirical insights about the diverse emotions associated with loneliness. For this, the project team will employ a multi-method analysis, including life-story interviews, a discourse analysis of scholarly literature, personal blogs, public testimonies and text-as-data-supported reviews of expert debates and policy discussions.
- Sampling strategy: Middle-aged EU citizens across Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Netherlands, and Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Netherlands. Recruitment via community initiatives and online platforms.
- Data outputs: Datasets from fieldwork, empirical analyses, and discourse analysis; visualizations of data and discourses. Findings from the interview and discourse work are brought together to map how individual feelings connect to structural factors like work, family, and available public narratives.
- All qualitative materials are interpreted with the project’s interpretive analysis of emotions method, which traces who expresses emotions, where, and with what language. This approach treats emotions as socially embedded meanings and examines their surrounding social context, rather than as simple drivers of behaviour.
